Erna Hitzberger

Erna Hitzberger (born August 19, 1905 as Erna Schubert in Berlin ; † March 10, 2003 ) was a German textile designer and professor.

Life

Due to her talent, Erna Hitzberger was accepted as a student at the educational institution of the State Museum of Applied Arts at the age of 14 and studied there until 1927.

From 1927 to 1929 she ran her own design studio in Berlin and from 1929 to 1931 worked for the architect Emil Fahrenkamp in Düsseldorf . From October 1, 1931 to March 31, 1935 she headed the class for textile art and decorative painting at the Reimann School in Berlin, the largest private arts and crafts school in Germany. In addition, she managed the textile workshops affiliated with the Reimann School. 1935–1941 she taught at the Textile and Fashion School in Berlin and took over the management of the textile design department. From 1941 to 1943 Hitzberger worked as a freelancer. After her flight from the East in 1945, another phase of freelance work followed from 1946 to 1948. She designed, among other things, theater sets in Bielefeld and Braunschweig. In 1948 she was appointed to the Folkwang College for Design in Essen , where in 1965 she was given the title of "Professor". She taught there until 1971.

Works and exhibitions

Hitzberger created numerous print fabric and weaving collections, designed carpets, stage curtains, decors for glass and porcelain and wallpaper collections.

In the course of her career, Erna Hitzberger's works have been shown in numerous exhibitions. The most important of these include world exhibitions and triennials in Berlin, Cologne, Wiesbaden, Essen, Monza, Milan, Amsterdam, Paris, Brussels and Munich.
