Ernest Alexandre Dominique d'Arenberg (German Ernst Alexander Dominicus von Arenberg ; born December 26, 1643 , † June 3, 1686 in Pamplona ) was the 9th ninth Prince of Chimay . He was in the service of Spain and was, among other things, governor of the Duchy of Luxembourg and viceroy of Navarre .

Life

He was the son of Philippe de Ligne Arenberg , Prince of Chimay and formerly Governor of the Duchy of Luxembourg. The mother was Theodora Maximilienne van Gaveren Herimez . After the death of his father, he bore the title de Ligne, duc d'Arenberg, prince de Chimay, comte de Beaumont et de Frezin, baron de Hallwyn et de Commines, seigneur d'Avesnes, pair de Hainault . He inherited all of his allodial property from his great uncle and godfather Ernst von Isenburg-Grenzau . A comparison was made with the Elector of Trier regarding the rule of Arenfels . With Kurköln, on the other hand, there was a long legal battle over the Cologne pledges of Linz, Neuerburg and Altenwied.

Like his father, he was in the service of the Spaniards in the Spanish Netherlands and was governor and captain general of the Duchy of Luxembourg and the county of Chiny from 1680 to 1684 . Since 1675 he was also a knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece . In the same year he married Maria de Cardenas, a lady-in-waiting of the Spanish queen, in Madrid. The marriage remained childless.

As governor of Luxembourg, he led the defense of the city against various attempts by Louis XIV to take them. During the siege of 1684 he was able to hold the city against a superior force for a few months, but was finally forced to surrender. He left the city with the remains of his troops. Most recently he was viceroy of the Spanish part of Navarre.

Since he died without an heir, the property passed to the descendants of his aunt Anna Katharina de Ligne. Through her husband, Chimay came to the house of d'Henin-Lietard .
