The Ernest Henry Mine is a copper - gold - magnetite mine in Queensland , Australia , approximately 130 miles from Mount Isa and 38 kilometers from Cloncurry . The name of the mine is borrowed from Ernest Henry, who was the first European to explore the area in 1866.
The mine was built in 1993 after a significant copper-gold deposit was discovered in 1991. It opened in October 1997 and Xstrata Copper , a wholly-owned subsidiary of Xstrata , bought it in June 2003 from Mount Isa Mining Holdings Limited .
In December 2009, the mine operators were Xstrata Copper announced that it the open pit mine to an underground mining will expand. In December 2011 the first commercially usable iron concentrate was produced, which is then shipped to Asia for iron ore smelting. This created the first iron ore concentrator in Queensland in 2011. It is planned to mine 6 million tons of ore annually, which will enable the production of 50,000 tons of copper and 70,000 ounces of gold in one concentrate from 2013.
Xstrata Copper announced in February 2012 that on June 29, 2011, it had acquired the E1 and Monakoff copper deposits near the Ernest Henry Mine from Exco Resources Ltd for AUD 175 million. The E1 deposit is approximately 5 miles east and Monakoff 13 miles south of the Ernest Henry Mine and forms the Mount Margaret Mining Project .
In 2010 the Ernest Henry Mine produced 74,595 tons of copper concentrate and 91,259 ounces of gold. The mine produced around 30 percent of Xstrata Copper's copper production in northern Queensland.
The expansion of the mines also means that operations can continue until 2024.
