Trinidad Ernesto Timoteo Francisco Icaza Sánchez (born January 26, 1866 ; † 1935 ) was a Mexican portrait and animal painter as well as an ambitious rider, who became known for his horse and rider paintings.

biography

Ernesto Icaza was the son of Joaquín de Icaza Mora and his second wife María de la Luz Victoria Sánchez Colomo, whose marriage resulted in four other children. It is known that his mother died in 1881 when he was 15 years old. On February 25, 1891, he married Diega María Ángela Cruzado Basabe. The marriage with her remained childless. It is not known whether he studied painting or whether he learned the skills himself. In addition to hundreds of oil paintings on canvas or cardboard, between 1910 and 1920 he painted a few of the murales typical of Mexico at that time . Because of his horse and rider motifs, he went down in the art history of Mexico as “Charro Pintor” (“equestrian painter”). His pictures can now be found in well-known galleries and museums, many of which are also privately owned.
