history

In 1895 Ernst Abbe , Hermann Zeiss and Eduard Rosenthal planned the establishment of a public reading room in Jena. The reading hall, which opened on November 1, 1896 at Löbdergraben 15 in Jena, was supported by the association of the same name founded on February 20, 1886, whose work was funded by the Carl Zeiss Foundation . was supported. For the first time in 1901, the municipal council also approved municipal grants. The house on Löbdergraben was soon bursting at the seams, so that when planning the building of the Volkshaus, the placement of the reading room was considered right from the start. In the new rooms in the tower building there, the reading room in the Volkshaus Jena was reopened on September 20, 1902 . Despite the negative effects of the First World War and the desolate financial situation during the Weimar Republic , the facility was able to be maintained and even further developed. In the time of National Socialism , the now heavily politicized library, like all “public libraries”, was “cleaned up” in accordance with National Socialist ideology. After extensive modernization work, it was reopened on November 6, 1937 as the "Ernst Abbe Library and Reading Hall". In 1945, the part of the Jena Volkshaus that housed the library was badly damaged by bombing and library operations were temporarily suspended.

According to the order of Marshal Georgi Konstantinowitsch Zhukow and the order No. 4 of the Allied Control Council, publications with militaristic or National Socialist content were eliminated and stocks that had been segregated during the Nazi era were reintegrated. Branches were opened in Jena-Nord in 1963 and in Jena-Lobeda in 1976 . In 1982, the premises in the Jena Volkshaus were renovated and redesigned. After the reunification , the municipality took over the sponsorship because of the unresolved situation of the GDR Zeiss company and foundation. The “Neue Lesehallenverein e. V. “has sponsored the library since 1998.

The Ernst-Abbe-Bücherei Jena has been an establishment of the municipal own enterprise JenaKultur since 2005 . At the same time, the district library in Jena-Nord was closed due to austerity measures.

Due to renovation work and a planned realignment of the Volkshaus, the city of Jena decided in 2018 to build a new library and citizen service center on Engelplatz. Completion is planned for 2023. In July 2019, the Ernst-Abbe-Bücherei therefore moved out of the Volkshaus after 117 years and has since been located in intermediate quarters in the former eye clinic.
