The Ernst Auwärter body and vehicle KG , short EA , was a renowned German Coachbuilder based in Steinenbronn , mainly from the 1950s to the 2000s coaches produced.
history
The family business was founded in 1854 by Friedrich Auwärter as a wheelwright . From 1928 buses were also produced. In 1935, Gottlob Auwärter left the family business in order to found his own company, which became known through the Neoplan bus brand . In 1944 Paul and Ernst Auwärter took over their father's business, which they shared in 1949: Paul Auwärter mainly produced trailers , Ernst Auwärter omnibuses. The specialty were minibuses, so-called club buses ( called “Clubstar” and “Teamstar” at EA); But there were also large long-distance coaches up to the 15-meter three-axle ("Eurostar") produced in small numbers.
After the fall of the Berlin Wall , the company invested in the former VEB motor vehicle repair plant (KIW) in Gera , which was initially developed into a base for Auwärter customers in Eastern Europe and managed as a subsidiary EA Karosserie- und Fahrzeugbau Gera GmbH . From 1992 to 2004 around 600 minibuses based on the Mercedes Sprinter were also produced there. The Ernst Auwärter KG could hold as the last classic Omnibus coachbuilders in Germany until the beginning of the 21st century. In 2004, the year of its 150th anniversary, the company's turnover was around 30 million euros. 130 employees produced around 220 buses a year.
At the end of 2004, the subsidiary in Gera had to file for bankruptcy. Today the bus division is continued there by TS Fahrzeugtechnik GmbH .
In 2005, the company also filed for bankruptcy for its headquarters in Steinenbronn. The local operating facility was taken over by the Austrian vehicle manufacturer Pucher on September 1, 2005 .
