Ernst Czóbel

Ernst Czóbel (* 1886 in Budapest ; † 1953 ibid) was a Hungarian historian, translator, diplomat and politician.

From 1903 he was an active social democrat in the Social Democratic Party of Hungary . In 1919 he became ambassador of the Hungarian Soviet Republic in Vienna and arrested in Budapest the same year. He lived in the Soviet Union from 1922 to 1947 and was imprisoned again from 1936 to 1945.

Among other things, Czóbel was one of the editors of the First Marx-Engels Complete Edition .

His older brother Béla Czóbel (1883–1976) was an expressionist artist.
