First Officer (German Navy)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the German Navy , the first officer ( IO , also 1O ) is the first assistant and deputy of the commander or captain of a warship ; but also in the troops service union hierarchy after the commander or captain of the highest officer onboard.

The IO manages the internal service of the ship and regulates the work routine. According to the military disciplinary code of the Bundeswehr , he generally has the disciplinary authority of a company commander (level 1). The IO is the superior of all crew members with the exception of the commander. The commander himself is the disciplinary superior of the IO and thus the next higher disciplinary superior of the crew members with the disciplinary authority of a battalion commander (level 2). This ensures that the next higher disciplinary superior is always on site as a complaint authority for most disciplinary cases, even during long voyages.

In contrast to a ship, boats do not have an IO . There the commander exercises level 1 disciplinary authority.
