Erwin Hillier
Erwin Hillier (born September 2, 1911 in Berlin-Charlottenburg , † January 2, 2005 in London ) was a German-British cameraman .
Life
He dealt with painting at an early stage and began studying at the Berlin University of Art in 1927 . In 1929 he continued his studies in London and then returned to Berlin. Through the mediation of FW Murnau , he became camera assistant for Fritz Lang's classic The Testament of Dr. Mabuse .
In the seizure of power by the Nazis in 1933 emigrated Hillier and from then lived in London. As a camera assistant, he worked almost exclusively with foreign cameramen, including Curt Courant and Günther Krampf .
In 1941 Hillier, now a British citizen, made his debut as chief cinematographer with the comedy agent The Lady of Lisbon . In the following years he worked for the Archers film company.
Between 1948 and 1968 he made a total of ten films with director Michael Anderson , including the war film May 1943 - The Destruction of the Dams and the crime thriller Whispering Shadows . Here and in various other black-and-white films such as the horror film The Black 13 , he made intensive use of light and shadow effects.
After the end of his time as a cameraman, he tried in vain to produce films about Anna Pavlova and Pyotr Tchaikovsky . He was only involved in 1988 as co- production manager on River of Death .
