features
Construction of the Imago
The animal reaches a length of 24-28 mm, 16-22 mm of which falls on the abdomen . The hind wings are between 19 and 28 mm long. Young males have a yellowish-brownish color and show brown stripes on the abdomen on the sides. With age, the color quickly changes to a bright reddish-brown shade. The abdomen then turns a light ash blue in the course of the further aging process. The cerci is brown. The males have a more pronounced shade at the base of the wing than the females, which varies in color from light yellow to a pronounced dark red.
Construction of the larva
The larva has a hairless body except for the prothorax . The head is longer than the thorax with four notches on the lower jaw. The molar tooth formula is (2-4), but always without a molar dam. The third segment of the antennas is the longest. The paired side plates (ventrolateral plates) of the eleventh abdominal segment , the so-called paraproct , are smooth when viewed from the side.
Similar species
In addition to the similarity to some representatives of its own genus, such as the Erythrodiplax basifusca and Erythrodiplax minuscula , from which it can be distinguished by its bright red color at the latest as an adult, the E. minuscula can also be confused with the Ladona deplanata . However, this has brown stripes at the base of the wings.
