Narration parlor

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The story-telling salon is an event in which each participant tells a story from their life on a previously agreed topic . A salonnier or a salonnière moderates and mediates between the contributions of the individual narrators. The concept of the narrative salon was developed and tested primarily by the Rohnstock Biografien company.

nature

Telling is one of the oldest and most direct forms of communication, in which needs are articulated, knowledge is passed on and experiences are exchanged. This requires an occasion, a room and certain rituals. There is usually no controversial discussion, but questions about the reports are permitted. It offers a public forum for the memories of contemporary witnesses and values the lived experience of every single person. In the narration salon, each participant experiences space and attention for his or her story. In this way, a spectrum of life experiences and philosophies can unfold in up to about two hours.

history

On the one hand, the idea of the narrative salon goes back to a tradition of the Jewish Sabbath . The members of the family gather on Friday evening, everyone shares their experiences of the past week and hears the stories of the others.

Another line of tradition leads to the Paris, Vienna and Berlin salons of the 18th and 19th centuries. Casual sociability, openness, tolerance, mutual respect and a common theme form the framework for the individual contributions. There is also a relationship to the storytelling café , which has enriched storytelling culture since the 1970s. Unlike in the narration salon, there is usually only one narrator. The narration salon promotes verbal communication and builds bridges between different generations, social and cultural groups.

In a structural development project, the concept of the narrative salon has now been tested in order to build bridges and enable the future for structurally weak regions. The "Lausitz at a table" project is the first of its kind to use the narrative salon as a tool to bring people together.
