The Archangel Michael Church ( Russian Церковь Архангела Михаила ) is a Russian Orthodox church in the city of Yaroslavl in Russia . It was built from 1657 to 1682 in the immediate vicinity of the Savior Transfiguration Monastery .

history

The construction of the Archangel Michael Church began in 1657 and lasted 25 years. This was not completed until 1682. The layout of the church is almost identical to that of the Church of St. Nicholas and the Church of the Prophet Elijah in Yaroslavl.

The wall paintings of the church were completed in 1731 by the Yaroslavl master painters under the direction of Fyodor Fyodorov. The elaborate fresco painting in the interior is characteristic of the latest Yaroslavl fresco painting.

In 1924 the church was closed. Some items and old pictures were stolen and later turned up in various museums. The magnificent frescoes were badly damaged by renovations inside the building.

After the end of the Soviet Union , the church was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church. In 1994 the renovation began and by 2000 the outer facade was restored and stained glass was used in the windows. However, the frescoes above the entrance are still damaged.

architecture

The church is a red central building with five green onion domes . The middle onion dome is surrounded by four smaller ones in the corners. There is a bell tower at the western end of the church building .
