The dunce's cap , also Dunce Cap , is to the 18th century applied punishment or humiliation for students. It was an integral part of a classroom. The donkey cap had to be worn by pupils who had proven to be stupid in the eyes of the teacher and for this reason were exposed in front of the entire class. Signs with various inscriptions that the students had to wear around their necks were also used for humiliation.

Appearance

The donkey cap is reminiscent of a helmet and an Easter bunny costume. Bells were often attached to the cap. Those who had them on their heads had to keep still to prevent the bells from ringing.

variants

The donkey cap was put on for various reasons, depending on the teacher. There are also several variants of performing the humiliation.

One version is the exclusion of a naughty student from class by leaving him standing in front of the door with a donkey cap on his head.

Likewise, unruly students with donkey caps on their heads had to stand for several hours at the donkey bench.

Another way was to put the student with a donkey cap on in a corner of the classroom called the donkey corner .

Even students who hadn't learned their quota had to put on donkey caps.

A student had to sit on the so-called penalty bench (last bench in the classroom) if he had not studied. First there were blows with the cane , then the student got the donkey cap on. After the prayer or chant, the teacher checked homework, fingernails and whether the students had a clean handkerchief with them. If a student had no homework or a clean handkerchief, let alone well-groomed fingernails, the donkey cap was put on. They were not allowed to be dropped off on the way home either.
