Esmond Samuels

Esmond "Ezzie" Samuels (* 1922, † 9. September 2005 ) an American was jazz - saxophonist .

Samuels began his music career in big bands in the early 1940s ; around 1945 he played tenor saxophone in Luis Russell's orchestra . He later worked with Bud Powell , Herbie Nichols , Ruth Brown and The Ink Spots, among others . He also led his own formations with which he played in venues such as the Savoy Ballroom and the Apollo Theater . In the 1950s and 1960s he had engagements with his Ezzie Combo at the New York nightclub Baby Grand ; there he performed with Nipsey Russell and Big Maybelle, among others . In the field of jazz, Samuels, who died in September 2005 at the age of 83, was involved in eight recording sessions between 1945 and 1948. a. with Luis Russell and Cootie Williams and in 1948 under his own name.
