Nipsey Russell (* 15. September 1918 in Atlanta , Georgia , USA as Julius Russell , † 2. October 2005 in New York City , New York ) was an American actor and entertainer .

Live and act

Nipsey Russell began his career in rock and roll revues in the mid-1950s . He became known in the USA in the early 1960s when he played Officer Anderson in the popular TV comedy series Car 54, Please Report ( Car 54, Where Are You? ). After a year he left the series and appeared in various series and shows such as The Jacky Gleason Show , The Dean Martin Show or The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and made a name for himself as a great comedian.

In the 1970s, Russell hosted several game shows such as To Tell the Truth . He was known to recite funny poems here now and then, which also led to his nickname The Poet Laureate of Television . He rarely appeared in movies, but he is best known for his role as the Tin Man in The Wiz - The Magic Land (remake of The Wizard of Oz ).

Broadway , where he appeared in various shows, was an important pillar of his career for decades .

On Oct. 2, 2005 Nipsey Russell died at Lennox Hill Hospital in New York City on cancer .
