Essential video coding

MPEG-5 Essential Video Coding (EVC) is a standard for video compression that is defined by MPEG under the name MPEG-5, Part 1. The standard should consist of a license-free basic profile and individually switchable improvements.

The publicly available requirements document outlines a development process that defends itself against patent threats : Two sets of coding tools are defined, namely basic and advanced tools:

  • The basis consists of tools that were published more than 20 years ago or for which a Type 1 declaration is available. Type 1, or option 1, means no license fees in the ISO language.
  • Tools in the extended set must pass an additional test of the compression efficiency and can be deactivated individually. Bitstream switchable coding tools are also known from Divideon's XVC .

The standard is based on proposals from Samsung , Huawei and Qualcomm . Divideon is also involved in the development of the standard.
