Essex pig

Essex pig.

The Essex pig is an almost extinct breed of pig from England .

Breeding history

Believing that the old Essex pig breed from Essex in England had completely dissolved into the Wessex pig breed to form the British saddle pig breed , the Essex pig was declared extinct in 1967.

Farmer John Crowshaw had refused to crossbreed his Essex herd and thus saved this ancient breed. Today James Doherty of Jimmy's Farm is trying to rebuild the breed. The last of the Essex pigs can be seen at: Rozel Bay, Les Ormes Golf Club.
