The Essigwiesenklamm , also Essigwiesklamm , is a brook in the state or urban district of Karlsruhe in Baden-Württemberg . It is located in the northern edge of the Black Forest and includes the Essigwiesenklamm with its natural sources. It forms a habitat for partially protected animals and plants. The Bachkerbtal is only filled with water after rainfall, otherwise it dries out quickly in the water-permeable red sandstone, except for a few pools .

The Essigwiesenklamm lies on the mark of the municipality of Ettlingen and ends after about 1200 meters at the edge of the forest. There it flows into the Hedwigsquellbach, which rises in the Hedwigsquelle.

Surname

The basic word “gorge” in Ettlingen refers to a ravine, a ravine-like depression or a cliff. In the local namesake, the meanings of "Klamm" and "Klinge" hardly differ. A vinegar meadow and the vinegar fountain are first mentioned in 1762. The simultaneous and relatively late first mention makes it difficult to interpret the name. It is possible to name it according to the nature or appearance of the spring water; the name could also indicate a swampy soil condition or a low soil yield of the meadow. The name Essigwiese carried over to a forest district to the south. The Essigwiesklamm is first mentioned in 1871. The vinegar fountain is identical to today's Hedwigsquelle. In the 1880s a chief forester had the spring seized and named it after his wife.

Flora and fauna

The area is characterized by the mixed deciduous forest, old beech stands predominate. In the entire area of the Essigwiesenklamm there are numerous species of mushrooms, some of which are rare, as well as a few scattered native wild forest orchid species. Particularly noteworthy among the butterfly species are the Spanish flag , which is rare in Germany, as well as the large fire butterfly and the dark blue butterfly .
