The Esso refinery in Cologne was one of the three oil refineries in the city of Cologne. In 1982 crude oil processing was shut down. The chemical part of the refinery was decommissioned in 1985.

history

In the mid-fifties, Esso acquired an area of around 2 square kilometers in the Niehl district . In addition to the process facilities, an oil port on the Rhine as well as siding and a thermal power station were built. When it was commissioned in 1958, the then Minister of Economics, Ludwig Erhard, was present. In 1977 around half a billion DM was invested in the plant. A modern steam cracker was set up to convert gasoline into plastic precursors. A closure of the refinery was examined by Esso as early as 1978. The refinery's petroleum processing capacity was last 5.7 million tons per year.

Due to falling consumption and overcapacities in the refinery sector, Esso was forced to stop processing crude oil in Cologne. The German CEO of Esso Wolfgang Oehme assured in September 1981 that the steam cracker would continue to operate. In 1985 the steam cracker was finally shut down. A new steam cracker in Mossmoran , Scotland that processed North Sea natural gas replaced the steam cracker in Cologne.

In the future, Ford wants to build an electric car factory on the wasteland.
