The 2017 United States gubernatorial election was held as part of the November 7, 2017 general election. The governors of Virginia and New Jersey stood for election.

Starting point and choice

The Republican incumbent in New Jersey, Chris Christie , was not re-elected, which the law allows a maximum of two terms. The Democratic governor of Virginia , Terry McAuliffe was, the law will not be re-elected for a term of office pursuant.

Both elections were won by the respective candidate from the Democratic Party and the elected were put into office in January 2018. The new term of office ends in 2022.
