The 1993 United States gubernatorial election took place on November 2, 1993. The states of New Jersey and Virginia were elected . In both states, the Republican Party candidates won against the Democratic candidates.

In New Jersey, Christine Todd Whitman , who lost to Democrat Bill Bradley in the 1990 election to the US Senate , narrowly won 49.33 percent over Democratic incumbent James Florio , who received 48.29 percent of the vote. She became the first female governor in New Jersey history.

In Virginia, the incumbent Democratic governor Douglas Wilder could not run for another term of office (so-called term limit ), so that the Democrats nominated Mary Sue Terry as a candidate, previously Attorney General of the state since 1985 . However, she lost significantly with 40.91 percent of the vote against 58.29 percent for the Republican candidate George Allen .
