The 1973 United States gubernatorial election took place on November 6, 1973. The states of New Jersey and Virginia were elected .

New Jersey

In New Jersey, the Democrat Brendan Byrne won the election and replaced the 1969 elected Republican William T. Cahill , who lost the primary to his fellow party member and Congressman Charles W. Sandman and was no longer available for election. Byrne received 66.4 percent of the vote. The defeated Sandman came to 32.12 percent. Of the ten remaining candidates, some of whom belonged to smaller parties, some of whom ran independently, none achieved a share of more than 0.31 percent.

Virginia

  • In Virginia, the independent candidate and Lieutenant Governor Henry E. Howell competed against Republican Mills E. Godwin , who had been governor for the Democratic Party from 1966 to 1970 . The outcome of the election was very close: Godwin prevailed with a 14,972 vote lead. He received 50.72 percent of the vote. Howell got 49.28 percent.
