The gubernatorial election in the state of Wisconsin took place on June 5, 2012. It was a so-called recall election that had been launched by the Democrats to vote out the Republican Governor Scott Walker, who had only been in office for 17 months, in the middle of his term of office. Walker had met opposition for his austerity policies, and his cuts to public sector employees in particular were extremely unpopular. Mass protests broke out in the wake of the austerity measures, most notably in front of the Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison , which numbered more than 100,000 at its height. The Democrats under Tom Barrett, the Mayor of Milwaukee , launched a signature campaign collecting 900,000 signatures (360,000 more than required) for early gubernatorial elections. After an intense and relatively expensive (estimated $ 80 million, compared to $ 37 million in the 2010 gubernatorial election) election campaign, incumbent Walker and his running mate Rebecca Kleefisch surprisingly won the election with 1,335,585 votes (53.1%) against 1,164 .480 (46.3%) for the Tom Barrett / Mahlon Mitchell duo of the Democratic Party.
