Estaminet - Flemish tavern. Lesser Ury , 1884

The Estaminet ( French l'estaminet , m ) is a traditional restaurant that is typical of northern France (regions Nord-Pas-de-Calais and Picardy ) as well as Belgium . The Estaminet combines a café , pub and restaurant . It served as a meeting place for the population, you could chat over coffee or beer and eat something. Usually the estaminets are furnished in a rustic style and decorated with all kinds of tools and pictures from agriculture.

There are various theories about the origin of the word "Estaminet". It is widely believed that it is derived from the Walloon word “staminé” ( portico ). The Flemish word "Stamm" ( family ) is also believed to be the origin. Last but not least, the Spanish expression “Esta un minuto” ( stay a minute ) is mentioned - after all, Flanders was temporarily part of Spain.
