Esteban Salas y Castro
Esteban Salas y Castro (born December 25, 1725 in Havana , † July 14, 1803 in Santiago de Cuba ) was a Cuban composer and church musician .
Life
Esteban Salas studied philosophy, theology and canon law in Havana in addition to music . From 1764 he was Kapellmeister at the Cathedral of Santiago de Cuba , in 1790 he was ordained a priest here.
The late baroque master is considered the first "classical" composer in Cuba. He composed eight masses, two motets, three passions, several responsories, psalms, proprias, litanies, hymns and sequences as well as more than sixty villancicos and a number of autos sacramentales and tonadillas.
