The Estia ( Greek Ἑστία ) is a Greek daily newspaper published in Athens. In 1995 it had around 3900 readers. Culturally, the Estia can be classified as extremely conservative, politically as moderate-conservative. As a mouthpiece for linguistic purists , it is a niche product in the newspaper market and has readership in all political directions. In particular, it has long warned against the increasing use of foreign words and, in this context, against the use of the Latin script.

As the last daily newspaper it used the purist Katharevousa , which had been abolished as the official language since 1976, until around 2000 , but in a moderate form. In addition to the (now the monotonic system upgraded) Eleftheri Ora is the Estia also the only message-oriented newspaper, which did not follow the orthographic reform of 1982, d. H. still uses the polytonic system today .

history

In 1876 Pavlos Diomidis founded a weekly magazine called Ἑστία in Athens , the content of which was less a political newspaper than a literary and fiction publication. The Estia of that time was therefore more similar to today's Nea Estia ; It was not until 1894 that the well-known poet Georgios Drosinis converted it into a daily newspaper for politics, culture and business. In 1941, after the invasion of the German army, the Estia was discontinued, but it soon reappeared after the liberation by the Allies.

The newspaper has been in the hands of the Kyrou family since 1898. Adonis Kyrou took over the newspaper in 1898 and was its editor until his death in 1918. He was followed by his sons Achilles A. Kyrou († 1950) and Kyros A. Kyrou († 1974). From 1974 to 1997 Adonis K. Kyrou (son of Kyros A. Kyrou) was the editor who is also known through several books. The current editor is Alexis Zaousis (nephew of Adonis K. Kyrou) who also publishes the newspaper.

The Estia was set and printed using the old method of linotype / stereotype until 1997 , before it switched to a modern computer system ( desktop publishing ) (source: To Vima newspaper from December 21, 1997 in a review of a book by Adonis Kyrou ; Article also available on the Internet).
