Countess Ethelinde von Northeim (* around 1050, † after 1075) was Duchess of Bavaria by marriage and later Countess of Calvelage . Ethelinde was heir to the county of Emsland .

Life

Eldest daughter of Count Otto von Northeim (1020-1083) and his wife Richenza von Schwaben (1025-1083), daughter of Count Otto II. Through her mother, she was also a great-great-granddaughter of Emperor Otto II.

In 1062 Ethelinde was married to Duke Welf IV of Bavaria (1030 / 40-1101), son of Margrave Alberto Azzo II d'Este and his wife Kunigunde von Altdorf . The marriage was divorced in 1070 due to childlessness.

In 1070 she entered into a second marriage with Count Hermann I of Calvelage († 1082). The marriage produced a son, Count Hermann II (1075–1134).

Count Otto von Northeim was entrusted with the Bavarian ducal office by Empress Agnes in 1061, probably because he was the right man to face the Hungarians on the eastern border of the empire. In his new position Otto sought contact with other greats of the empire and soon afterwards married his very young daughter Ethelinde to Welf IV. Due to intrigues that led to his conviction, Otto von Northeim lost the Duchy of Bavaria. Duke of Bavaria became his son-in-law. In his new position, Welf IV resolved because of Otto's anti-imperial stance, his marriage to Ethelinde, which was now a hindrance to him in terms of imperial politics and had hitherto been childless. Shortly afterwards she married Count Hermann I von Calvelage-Ravensberg.
