Kunigunde from Altdorf

Kunigunde von Altdorf , also Chuniza , (* around 1020 ; † August 31, 1054 ) was the ancestor of the younger Welfen (Welfen- d'Este ).

Kunigunde was the only daughter of Count Welf II of Altdorf († 1030) and his wife Irmentrud (Irmengard, Imiza) († 1057), daughter of Count Friedrich I of Luxembourg († 1019) and niece of Empress Kunigunde († 1033 ). Her brother was Welf III. of Carinthia († 1055), the last Welf from the older line.

Around 1035 Kunigunde was married to the Margrave of Este Alberto Azzo II . He was the only son of Margrave Alberto Azzo I of Milan and his wife Adele. The marriage resulted in a son, Welf IV. , Who in 1055 after the death of his uncle Welf III. when his heir continued the Guelph line and was Duke of Bavaria from 1070 to 1077.
