Welf III.
Welf III. († November 13, 1055 at Bodman Castle ) from the Swabian branch of the Welfen family was Duke of Carinthia from 1047 to 1055.
Life
Welf III. was the only son of Count Welf II von Altdorf (today Weingarten ). In 1047 he was enfeoffed with the Duchy of Carinthia and the Margraviate of Verona . Welf III. remained unmarried and childless. He transferred his possessions to the Altdorf Monastery, which prompted his mother Imiza, the widow of Welfs II., To move her grandson Welf IV. , The son of her daughter Countess Kunigunde von Altdorf from her marriage to Alberto Azzo II. D'Este , to Germany to bring so that he may continue the family in a female line.
Welf III. was the last of the older Guelphs. His successor on the family estates is the progenitor of the younger Guelphs, which still exist today.
He was buried in the house monastery of the Guelphs, the Weingarten Abbey .
