Ethmia bipunctella is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe grass leaf miner family (Elachistidae).

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 19 to 28 millimeters. Sedentary moths roll their wings around the body. The costal half of the forewings is black, the other half, including the inner and outer edge of the wing, is white. The course of the borderline between the black and white area is only slightly variable. The black reaches the outer edge of the wing in the middle, the inner angle is white. A series of black lines runs along the hem line. When viewed from above, there are three black dots on either side of the thorax .

Ethmia bipunctella is common in Europe and North America .

biology

The caterpillars live in fine webs and feed on the flowers and leaves of common adder's head ( Echium vulgare ), common dog's tongue ( Cynoglossum officinale ) and other types of leafy plants . These include species from the genera Anchusa , Cynoglossum , Echium , Lithospermum , Symphytum . The caterpillars pupate in dead stems or rotting wood. The species forms two generations a year, which fly from late April to late June and from August to September. The moths come to light .
