Ethnarch

Ethnarch was a ruler title in ancient times. The term is derived from the Greek words ethnós = people and archós = prince, put together it means people prince.

An ethnarch was therefore comparable to a grand duke. The best known ethnarch was Herodes Archelaos from the Christmas story of the Gospel of Matthew .

In the Central Byzantine Empire of the 10th and 11th centuries, high-ranking officers who commanded contingents of foreign mercenaries were raised to the rank of ethnarch .
