Etna Island is a towering island off the northeastern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula . It is located 10 km north of the eastern end of the Joinville Islands .
The British polar explorer James Clark Ross discovered the island during his Antarctic expedition, which lasted from 1839 to 1843. He named it after its resemblance to the Etna volcano in Sicily .
