The Joinville Islands are a group of islands off the northeastern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula ; the islands are only separated from this by the Antarctic Sound .
- Joinville Island - located at 63 ° 15 ′ S , 55 ° 45 ′ W ; the largest of the islands.
- D'Urville Island - located directly north of Joinville Island and separated by the Larsen Canal ; the northernmost of the islands ( 63 ° 5 ′ S , 56 ° 20 ′ W ).
The Joinville Islands were discovered in 1838 by a French expedition under Captain Jules Dumont d'Urville .
The only settlement on the islands was the Argentine research station Petrel , built in 1967 on Dundee Island , which was abandoned in the 1995/96 Antarctic season.
