The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (English Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research - SCAR ) is a committee of the International Council for Science ( ICSU ), was established on June 28, 1958th

This non-governmental association coordinates the scientific activities in the Antarctic area. It alone decides on the establishment of research stations on the continent. The SCAR maintains working groups in the fields of biology , geodesy , glaciology , meteorology , medicine , the physics of the earth's atmosphere and oceanography .

The SCAR also administers the Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica (CGA), the internationally binding directory of geographical names in Antarctica.

Every two years experiences are exchanged at the SCAR conferences and recommendations for future Antarctic research are made.
