The Joinville Island ( French Île Joinville ) is the largest of the Joinville Islands . Located off the northeastern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula , from which it is separated by the Antarctic Sound , it is about 64 kilometers long and 20 kilometers wide in an east-west direction. It has an area of 1607 km². The island was discovered in 1838 by a French expedition under Jules Dumont d'Urville , roughly mapped and named after François Ferdinand Philippe Louis Marie , Prince de Joinville (1818–1900), the third son of the Duke of Orléans Louis Philip of France .
The highest mountain on the island is Mount Tholus , with a height of 825 meters, according to other sources even 1112 meters. 10.5 km north of it stands Mount Percy , which according to both sources is 765 meters high and in the former is incorrectly referred to as the highest mountain on Joinville Island.
There are colonies of sea birds , especially Adelie penguins, in several places on the island . BirdLife International has three Important Bird Areas : Ambush Bay (AQ061) in the northeast, D'Urville Monument (AQ067) in the southwest and Madder Cliffs (AQ068) in the west.
There is an automatic weather station operated by Brazil on Joinville Island .
