The Madder Cliffs are around 305 m high cliffs with a reddish color on the west coast of Joinville Island at the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula . They tower on the north side of the entrance to Suspiros Bay .
On the rocky beach under the cliffs is a colony of Adelie penguins consisting of 20,000 to 25,000 breeding pairs . Gentoo penguins , Dominican gulls and the white-faced sheath-beak also breed here . An area of 55 ha is therefore designated by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area (AQ068).
The Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey surveyed the cliffs between 1953 and 1954. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1956 after her madder red (English madder red ) tuff .
