The Ettlinger Line (also called Lower Line) was a defensive line built during the War of the Spanish Succession in 1707 from entanglements and entrenchments , which replaced the Bühl-Stollhofener Line from 1701 after it was lost in May 1707 and leveled by the French troops .

history

A few months after the loss of the Bühl-Stollhofen line, work on the Ettlinger line began on behalf of the Commander-in-Chief of the Rhine Army, Georg Ludwig von Braunschweig-Lüneburg . The line was reinforced in the War of the Polish Succession (1733-1738) by the inclusion of watercourses that could be dammed. At the beginning of May 1734 it was broken through by French troops near Spessart and then destroyed, but renewed as early as 1735. After that it lost its military importance.

location

The line flanked by the Malscher Landgraben lies between the Black Forest and Rheinaue south of the city of Karlsruhe, which was not yet founded at the time . Remains of the system with parapet and a redoubt are still visible in the south-west of Karlsruhe near the Heidenstückersiedlung over a length of around 500 m in the Hardtwald. A longer part of the complex is still visible in the forest of Rheinstetten . Since July 2010, attention has been drawn to the line in Karlsruhe by a notice board; Another sign is located in Rheinstetten on Pirschweg. Other visible remains are also present at Spessart .
