Eudokia Ingerina ( Middle Greek Εὐδοκία Ἰγγερίνα , * around 840; † 882 ) was mistress of the Byzantine emperor Michael III. and later as the wife of Basil I, Empress of Byzantium .

biography

Eudokia was the daughter of Ingar, a Varangian , and his wife Martinakia. Around 855, the 15-year-old Eudokia became the mistress of the Byzantine Emperor Michael III. (839-867). His mother Theodora II and her minister Theoktistos tried in vain to organize a bridal show for Michael III. to dissuade him from his lover Eudokia Ingerina. Emperor Michael III. married Eudokia Dekapolitissa, chosen by his mother, but then completely neglected her and continued to live with Eudokia Ingerina. In order to get Michael's favor, his favorite Basil (812-886) divorced his wife and married Eudokia Ingerina. Basil murdered - with the consent of the emperor - in April 866 Bardas , who ruled the empire in Michael's name, and received the title of Caesar a few weeks later . In September 867, however, Basil killed Michael and ascended the throne himself.
