Bardas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bardas (Βάρδας) Mamikonian († April 21, 866 ) was regent for the Byzantine Emperor Michael III from 856 to 866 .

Life

Bardas was the son of Marinos Mamikonian and the brother of Empress Theodora , wife of Emperor Theophilos . His family comes from the Armenian dynasty of the Mamikonian .

During Michael's minority, the empire was ruled by his mother Theodora and the eunuch Theoktistus , who neglected his upbringing in order to secure their rule. Michael grew up in debauchery, came under the influence of his uncle Bardas, who led him in 856 to send Theodora and his older sisters, including the co- empress Thekla , to a monastery, and seized power himself.

Bardas justified the usurpation by promoting internal reforms, while Michael himself took an active part in the campaigns. On April 22nd, 862 (or April 12th, 864) he was raised to the rank of Kaisar by his nephew . In 866, Bardas' influence was overcome by the former groom Basileios , who himself took part in the government after the assassination of the emperor, while the son-in-law of Bardas, Symbatios , who was involved in the assassination, got nothing . The following year, Basil also murdered Michael III. and ascended the throne himself.
