The owl rock is one of several geological outcrops in the urban area and on the edge of Kamenz , which are formed by the Grauwacken of the Kamenzer series and which have been placed under protection as geological natural monuments . Further outcrops can be found on Teufelsberg , Gickelsberg and Kuckucksburg . In the slope outcrop on the owl rock, the alternation between granular greywacke and dense, schisty varieties is particularly noticeable. With the ordinance of the Bautzen District Office on the establishment of the “Owl Rocks ” area natural monument of December 1, 2011, the rocks have been under protection as a natural area monument since February 15, 2012 .

Location, geology and vegetation

The owl rock is located directly on the Bautzener Berg , whose massif allows a good view of the city of Kamenz, the Breite Straße and the Bautzener Straße . Below the rock was the ford of the Black Elster , which is why there were probably three Kretschams for carters, hikers and pilgrims on the rock . Today the approximately 0.59  hectare large area natural monument is delimited below the steep face by residential buildings, buildings by markets and parking lots. In the east, gardens form the border of the area, in the south the small path leading to the Bautzener Berg.

The rock formation is located "in the middle of the urban urban landscape" and should be preserved because of its "landscape aesthetic function" to "document the geomorphogenesis of the landscape around Kamenz, especially the Grauwacke outcrops of the Kamenzer series" and their typical vegetation. What is particularly noticeable on the Eulenfelsen is the alternation between grainy Grauwacken and dense, schisty varieties. Under Feihaltung the open rocky areas should by a low-noise natural forest development from the existing hornbeam sessile oak forest , a dry oak trees are forest.

Easter singing on the owl rock

On Owls rock for decades by the "singing group in the Owl Mountains" and later by "Kamenzer Sängerbund" the Easter Singing maintained on the first day of Easter.

The "Gesangsverein im Eulenberge" was founded on February 1, 1842 in the house of the Spittel administrator Pörschel (* 1819), which later belonged to the freight forwarder Berger. At that time the rock belonged to the village of Spittel , which was incorporated in 1903 , although historically it was already in the first settlement of Kamenz, which was founded before 1225.

The "Kamenz Singers Association", which continued the tradition of Easter singing on the Eulenfelsen, was founded on February 12, 1850 by the "Gesangsverein im Eulenberge" and other Kamenz singing societies.
