Eupener Platt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Eupener Platt is a dialect spoken in the Belgian city of Eupen in the German-speaking community . Eupen lies in the area of a dialect continuum between the Limburg and Ripuarian dialects. The Limburg dialects are part of the Lower Franconian language group (similar to the Dutch language ), and the Ripuarian dialects are part of the West Central German dialects . This part of the dialect continuum is also known as the platdietse Streek , although the area is part of a larger dialect continuum between Ripuarian and Limburgish that extends in a semicircle from Düsseldorf to south of the city of Eupen in the Eifel . The Eupener Platt is the southernmost contiguous dialect that can be described as the East Limburg-Ripuarian transition area. Ripuarian dialects are spoken to the east of Eupen.

Similar dialects are spoken in the immediate vicinity of Eupen, for example there is the Platt in Welkenraedt , Gemmenich and Montzen . A Walloon (French) dialect is spoken in the west . Eupener Platt is less widespread in today's parlance than in the neighboring towns of the Low German communities .

Diphthongization is typical of the Eupener Platt .

Examples (in Limburgish, Eupener Platt and German):

  • handj- Haint- Hand
  • lope-lowpe-run
  • moond- Maunt- mouth

The diphthongizations are for example: ai in Haint, ow in lowpe and au in Maunt. As is common in the German-speaking world, nouns in Eupener Platt are written with capital letters . Eupen has been influenced by the Rhenish culture from time immemorial . A large part of the population speaks Standard German, which is (slightly) influenced by the Rhenish Regiolekt and (Walloon) French vocabulary.
