Siegfried Theissen (born March 28, 1940 in Eupen ) is a Belgian Germanist and linguist .

Live and act

After graduating from the Royal Athenaeum in Eupen, Theissen attended the Regency School in Nivelles , where he obtained a secondary school teacher diploma in 1960. He then got a job as a teacher in Dolhain and from 1963 began studying German at the University of Liège , which he completed in 1967. Subsequently, he initially got a position as a German teacher at the Royal Athenaeum in Verviers , but only a year later he was brought back to the University of Liège as an assistant for Dutch philology by his former professor, where he received his doctorate in 1973 on Germanisms in modern Dutch .

With the exception of an interim semester as a lecturer at the University of Cologne , Theissen continued to work at the University of Liège, which appointed him in 1979, initially as associate professor and from 1989 as full professor for the chair of modern Dutch philology , language proficiency and dialectology . Theissen retired in 2005.

As a special honor, Theissen received admission to the Royal Academy for Dutch Linguistics and Literature in 1999 as the only German-speaking scientist to date and was also admitted to the Polish Academy of Sciences in 2011.

Theissen is the author of numerous non-fiction books, including declining dictionaries for German-Dutch, contrastive dictionaries for German-Dutch, German-French and French-Dutch as well as dictionaries on German, Dutch and French idioms . Especially after his retirement, Theissen concentrated on the Eupener Platt and brought out, among other things, a new edition of the dictionary of Eupen dialect by August Tonnar and Wilhelm Evers. Furthermore, he wrote several plays that were performed by the Eupener Theaterfreunde, and wrote a weekly column for the Grenz-Echo newspaper in 2012-2013 under the title: "Vertélltjere".
