The Koninklijke Academie voor Nederlandse Taal en Letteren ( Royal Academy for Dutch Language and Literature ; abbreviated KANTL ) is a Flemish association that was founded in 1886 with the aim of promoting cultural and literary life in Flanders. It was the first official institution in Belgium to deal scientifically with the Dutch language and literature. The academy's secretariat and library are located on Koningstraat in Ghent .

The academy played an important role in the emancipation of the Flemish people in Belgium and influenced the Flemish movement in the field of culture. In political terms, the Academy has always been neutral. Every five years the KANTL awards a prose prize ( Prijs Proza KANTL ), which is worth € 6,250.

composition

Since 1939 the academy consisted of 30 regular members and 25 honorary foreign members. Since autumn 2018, a maximum of 40 full members and an unlimited number of honorary members have been planned. Ordinary members should include academics, authors and people who work in Belgium in the field of Dutch language and literature. The honorary members are composed of former members as well as foreigners.

history

The association was founded as the Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie voor Taal- en Letterkunde (Royal Flemish Academy for Linguistics and Literature). In 1972, the Cultuurraad voor de Nederlandse cultuurgemeenschap (Cultural Council of the Dutch Cultural Community), the predecessor of the Flemish government , officially designated the language spoken in Flanders as Dutch . As a result, the association was renamed the Koninklijke Academie voor Nederlandse Taal- en Letterkunde . In 2015, the KANTL presented its 51-title, dynamic Dutch literary canon from a Flemish perspective, which tries to represent a consensus on which works are to be regarded as classics of Dutch and Flemish literature. It should serve as a source of inspiration, to promote reading and as a guide in class.

In the autumn of 2018, the goals were reformulated and for the first time legally fixed, as well as the resolution of new core tasks, including an expansion of public relations work and the maintenance of the literary canon. The possible number of members has been increased from 30 to 40. In addition, the academy was renamed again, since the current work of the KANTL is no longer limited to linguistics and literary studies, but relates to language and literature in the broadest sense.
