Euphorbia clandestina is a species of the genus spurge ( Euphorbia ) in the family of Euphorbiaceae (Euphorbiaceae).
description
The succulent Euphorbia clandestina forms thick, herbaceous plants with a 30 to 60 centimeter high trunk. This is rarely branched and is up to 3.7 centimeters thick. It is covered with protruding and slightly bent back warts and patterned by them. These warts are up to 8 millimeters long and are arranged in many spiral rows on the trunk. The linear leaves are up to 37 millimeters long and 4 millimeters wide. They are in clusters at the tip of the shoots and are not succulent.
The inflorescence consists of single and sessile cyathia , which are enclosed by seven to nine bracts . The ovate bracts are up to 4 millimeters long and 3 millimeters wide. They overlap and are colored green on the inside and purple on the outside. The cyathia reach about 2.7 millimeters in diameter and are covered with very small downy hairs. The elongated nectar glands are colored yellow. The almost spherical and sessile fruits are 5 millimeters in size and also have very small downy hairs on the surface. Nothing is known about the seed.
Distribution and systematics
Euphorbia clandestina is widespread in the Western Cape province of South Africa.
The species was first described in 1804 by Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin .
