Eurogamer is an originally British online magazine for computer games. The website is operated by the British company Gamer Network (formerly Eurogamer Network), based in Brighton , which was founded in 1999 by the brothers Rupert and Nick Loman . There are now ten foreign-language branches with their own editorial offices, including a German-language site. The company claims to have the highest readership of any independent computer game website in Europe (over 5.7 million unique users in November 2011) and was the first website in this subject area to have its traffic checked by the independent verification system ABC Electronic. In addition, Eurogamer is the host of the British computer game fair Eurogamer Expo.
history
In February 2006 the company started its video channel Eurogamer TV, which was later integrated into the main page. At the computer game fair Games Convention in Leipzig in August 2006, Eurogamer launched its first foreign-language offshoot, Eurogamer Germany. Eurogamer France followed in June 2007, Eurogamer Portugal in May 2008, Eurogamer Netherlands in August 2008, Eurogamer Spain and Eurogamer Italy in October 2008, Eurogamer Romania in March 2009, Eurogamer Czech Republic in May 2009, Eurogamer Denmark in June 2009, Eurogamer Belgium in August 2009 and Eurogamer Sweden in April 2010. In April 2011, Eurogamer Netherlands and Belgium merged to form Eurogamer Benelux. In the same year, Eurogamer closed Romania. In November 2012, Eurogamer launched its first non-European website, Brasilgamer.
With GamesIndustry.biz, Eurogamer has a sister site that mainly reports on technical and economic issues in the game industry. In May 2008 the website launched the GamesIndustry.biz network for industry professionals.
Editorial structure
Eurogamer.net editor-in-chief is Tom Bramwell, who took over from Kristan Reed in January 2008. Bramwell is the oldest staff member and has been with the site since the spring of 2000. Regular authors include Oliver Welsh, Kieron Gillen , Jim Rossignol , John Walker , Simon Parkin , Alec Meer, Richard Leadbetter , Dan Whitehead and David McCarthy, as well as the former editor-in-chief of GamesIndustry.biz, Rob Fahey.
Eurogamer Germany, based in Rednitzhembach in Middle Franconia , is operated by the former PC Games editor -in- chief Oliver Menne . The editor-in-chief is Martin Woger, who took over from Oliver Menne's wife Tanja, who continues to work as editor for the website. Other members of the editorial team are Alexander Bohn-Elias, Benjamin Jakobs, Björn Balg, Sebastian Thor and Markus Hensel.
Eurogamer.net, Eurogamer.de and some other sites on the network do not use a number scoring system. Instead, there is a red symbol for bad games, and silver and gold symbols for good and very good games.
reception
At the Games Media Awards 2007, Eurogamer.net won in the categories Best Games Website - News and Best Games Website - Reviews & Features . In the following year, both categories were merged to form the Best Games Website category and again went to Eurogamer, just like in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012, which makes Eurogamer the only winner in this category to date. Also in 2007, the then deputy editor-in-chief Tom Bramwell won the award for Best Writer in Specialist Digital Media and Johnny Minkley, editor-in-chief of Eurogamer TV, the award for Best Games-Dedicated Broadcast on Mainstream TV or Radio . In 2008, the deputy editor-in-chief Ellie Gibson was named Specialist Games Writer - Online .
Rupert Loman was named Entrepreneur of the Year 2003 at the Sussex Business Awards and named "Media One to Watch" by The Observer in 2007. He was also chosen by Growing Business magazine in October 2008 as one of 30 so-called "Young Guns". Eurogamer founder Rupert Loman was interviewed by MCV magazine in February 2007. On August 19, 2007, the Sunday Telegraph also reported on Loman, who spoke to the magazine about his experiences when he gave up his studies in favor of Eurogamer.
