Eurogroup for Animals

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Eurogroup for Animals is an organization based in Brussels , Belgium that aims to improve the way animals are treated in the European Union . It represents animal welfare organizations from almost all member states of the European Union. Since it was founded in 1980, the organization has helped the European Union introduce higher legal requirements and standards in animal welfare.

With its animal welfare expertise, the Eurogroup for Animals advises various European institutions such as the European Commission , the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament . It also runs the secretariat of the Intergroup for Animal and Species Protection of the European Parliament, which meets monthly in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

The Eurogroup for Animals also works closely with retailers to convince companies to introduce higher animal welfare standards. In addition, she runs campaigns to improve the situation of farm animals, laboratory animals and wild animals, for example in 2008 to prevent the acceptance of cloning for food production in the EU.

history

The British animal welfare organization RSPCA decided to found the Eurogroup for Animals because it had recognized that more and more legal decisions relevant to animals are being prescribed at European level. Thus, in 1980 the Eurogroup for Animals was founded as the first coalition of animal welfare groups at European level. It is also one of the longest established non-governmental organizations in Brussels. Over the years the Eurogroup for Animals has grown to such an extent that at the beginning of 2012 it represented organizations from almost every country in the European Union. She used the expansion of the European Union to Central and Eastern Europe to support animal welfare organizations in these countries. International organizations such as the International Fund for Animal Welfare , Compassion in World Farming and World Society for the Protection of Animals are now also members of the Eurogroup for Animals. The German member is the German Animal Welfare Association and the Austrian representative in the Eurogroup for Animals is Vier Pfoten .
