European Restoration Day

The European Day of Restoration is a day of action, which takes place each year since 2018 on the second Sunday in October.

On this day, restorers throughout Germany and Europe give exclusive insights into their workplaces, which are located in museums, private studios, universities, monument offices and palace administrations. Visitors are invited to get to know case studies from current conservation and restoration projects.

The aim of the day of action is

  • To raise awareness of the importance of cultural heritage among people of all ages
  • Raise public awareness of the key role restorers play in the preservation of cultural assets
  • To impart knowledge about the profession of restorer
  • to draw attention to the complex, diverse field of activity of this applied science with its ethical basis
  • to illustrate the great responsibility restorers take on our cultural heritage by preserving material evidence of our society in their integrity and authenticity for future generations
  • explain how important the restoration expertise is for innovations in cultural heritage research and sustainable tourism
  • to illustrate which high international quality standards the professional group and its competencies for the preservation of cultural assets represent in 22 European countries.

The European day of conservation-restoration was proclaimed by the European umbrella organization of restorers' associations, ECCO , which coordinates the day of action across Europe.

In Germany, the day of action is organized by the Association of Restorers .

In Germany, the day of action took place for the first time on October 14, 2018. More than 260 restorers opened their doors nationwide. A total of 24,000 visitors came to the tours, lectures, open studios and laboratories at around 200 locations in Germany.
