The European Committee for Banking Standards (abbreviation ECBS of English European Committee for Banking Standards ) was an organization whose stated goal was to design standards and guidelines for the banking sector.
History and composition
The European Committee for Banking Standards was formed in December 1992 by three European associations:
- Banking Federation of the European Union ( EBF ),
- European Association of Co-operative Banks (EACB),
- European Savings Banks Group (ESBG).
These associations are also known as the European Credit Sector Associations (ECSA).
The ECSAs represent the interests of the European banks from the countries of the EU , the European Economic Area (EEA) and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) .
Participated as observers:
- European Central Bank (ECB),
- The main providers of cashless payments
- Mastercard Europe
- Visa Europe
- SWIFT
- Euro Banking Association (EBA).
The European Committee for Banking Standards had agreed to work with the ETSI ( European Telecommunications Standards Institute ).
In 2004 the European Committee for Banking Standards (ECBS) began to work closely with the European Payments Committee (EPC) and was absorbed into it in 2006. The website was taken over by another organization that no longer pursues the aims of the original ECBS.
task
The primary goal of the European Committee for Banking Standards was to further develop European payment traffic. To this end, standards have been developed that meet the requirements of business and trade.
The European Committee for Banking Standards produced technical reports and standard implementation guidelines. These should act as support in the development of payment applications.
At the European and international level, the European Committee for Banking Standards monitored standardization activities that could affect European payment transactions. The committee thus provided a forum for opinion-forming in the European banking sector for the further development of various standards.
