The Europa Hauptschule Leoben is a secondary school in Leoben in the Austrian state of Styria . The secondary school , which has existed in its current form since 2002, is located in the Donawitz district. It cultivates the idea of Europe and is a partner of other secondary schools in the Scandinavian region.

history

The school building was built between 1921 and 1927 and was ceremoniously opened in November of the same year. At that time Donawitz was still an independent municipality. Until 1978 the Pestalozzi secondary school for boys and the Pestalozzi secondary school for girls were located in the house. A parliamentary resolution from 1978 states that all public Austrian schools must be run co-educational (boys and girls together). On September 1, 2002, both schools were merged and reorganized. The Europa Hauptschule in Leoben has existed since then.

Mission statement

Today this school is characterized by the European idea. Particular efforts are made to cooperate with other schools from the EU area and this is also carried out through various educational projects that are co-financed by the EU. The school has partnerships with schools in Aalborg, Denmark (Vester Mariendal Skole), Karlskoga, Sweden (Karlbergsskolan 7 ~ 9) and Fredrikstad, Norway (Kråkerøy ungdomsskole). A language assistant from abroad should also promote the foreign language focus in order to better prepare the 10 to 14-year-old students for the future.

Educational content

The performance-differentiated teaching in small family groups corresponds to modern didactics. The school focuses on IT and technology. Two hours of IT per week are compulsory. Obtaining the European computer driving license is intended to give you a head start in further studies and in business. With the focus on technical handicraft lessons, young people learn manual skills and basic technical knowledge.

A project funded by the EU enables the partnership with the European high school Alsdorf in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Karlbergsskolan Karlskoga in Värmland, Sweden . The project is called "LAKE", an acronym from the names of the participating cities (Leoben, Alsdorf, Karlskoga) and Europe . Its motto is "The youth of three different European regions takes care of the environment".

The Europa Hauptschule Leoben is known far beyond the district boundaries for its performances with the school playgroup, and for some years now this creative area has been expanded with a “Modern Dance Group”.

Today almost 140 students are taught in nine classes by 27 teachers. In addition, all-day care for the students is offered.
