Europakampfbahn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Europakampfbahn in Magdeburg was an outdoor swimming pool. In June 1934, the outdoor pool was opened right next to the "Stadion Neue Welt" lido on Berliner Chaussee .

Structural matters

The "Wilhelmsbad eGmbH" was commissioned with the construction. The developer was the German Labor Front . The swimming pool and the spectator stands were built on the site of a fish pond. The grandstands held up to 6,000 spectators.

The grandstands were removed in 1939 and replaced by smaller, approximately 3.6 meter high grandstands, so that 1,680 spectators could be seated.

The Europakampfbahn was temporarily used for trout breeding.

On June 24, 2015, the 111,946 square meter plot of land around the Neue Welt stadium including the Europakampfbahn was sold to BTEC Beratungsgesellschaft mbH Gelsenkirchen . A leisure and event location is to be created.

Today (as of 2016) the diving pool no longer exists. The 50 meter swimming pool is overgrown.

Sporting use

The 50-meter swimming pool and diving platform were used for the 1934 European Swimming Championships . The organizer was the Magdeburg Swimming Club from 1896 . 15,000 spectators attended the event.

In the summer of the 1950s and 1960s, swimmers and water polo players from SG Dynamo Magdeburg trained there.
